B. Melvin Kiernan, Ph.D. ’57
Learn how a beloved alumnus and faculty member made a historic impact through his will.
The late B. Melvin Kiernan, Ph.D. ’57, professor emeritus of mathematics fondly referred to as “Mel,” made an impact at Saint Peter's University during his lifetime and beyond by naming us as a beneficiary in his will. His bequest has provided essential support for the General Scholarship Fund that benefits our students.
Mel came to Saint Peter’s in 1953 as an undergraduate. He went on to complete his B. Melvin Kiernan Master’s degree at Brown University, returning in 1959 to begin his teaching career at alma mater, where he remained for 44 years until his retirement in 2003. While working full time, he completed his Ph.D. at the prestigious Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, earning his degree in 1971.
Mel’s tenure at the University was marked with many noteworthy accomplishments. He was the first elected chair of the mathematics department and the first annual recipient of the Varrichio Award. This award reflected Mel’s meticulous preparation for the classes he taught, the high standards he set for his students and how deeply he wanted them to succeed. Indeed, he cared so much for our students that Mel’s annual philanthropic support spanned 52 years.
Thank you, Mel, for making a lasting impact on our students during your time at Saint Peter's University and beyond.
